Further information on what it takes to be a Retained Fire Fighter can be found on the Training Page of Kurri Kurri Fire Brigades Web Site

Do you have what it takes?

Below is a list of FAQ and things you should know before applying to become a fire fighter.

What is a Retained Station / Fire Fighter?

A Retained Station is a part time station where part time or Retained Fire Fighters (R F/F) work. The station is not a permanently manned station, meaning the fire fighters are on call from home or work rather than on duty at the station. Retained stations offer the same service as permanently manned being on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Do I need to be available all the time?

When applying for a position as a R F/F there is often an availability time that is an essential requirement. (usually daytime availability between the hours of 06:00 to 18:00). At our station we have a rostering system and you give your availability at the commencement of the week. A minimum of 4 fire fighters responds to each call. You can update your roster throughout the week subject to availability.

Will being a fire fighter ruin my social life?

Being a fire fighter can enhance or hinder your social life. You meet, work and become friends with new people from a variety of walks of life, it is a good conversation piece with friends and other work mates, but you may have to leave a social gathering to turn out to a call (you must be drug and alcohol free to turn out - this needs to be considered when rostering your availability).

But I don't know the first thing about fighting fires and that kind of thing!

New recruits are given basic training in fire fighting, HazMat and rescues before they can respond to incidents, after which a majority of training is gained through on the job experience where they are supervised and guided by experienced fire fighters. There are two compulsory drills per month where all fire fighters are given refresher and additional training.

How do I know when there is a fire call?

Retained Fire Fighters are supplied with a pager which is activated when there is a fire call.

Do I have to respond immediately?

NSWFB has guarantee of service to the community which means responding to a call within 10 minutes, the average turn out time is 4 minutes. While you need to respond to the station promptly for a call , it is not acceptable to break the law or jeopardise the safety of others while doing so (this means normal road rules). If a call is in your times of availability then yes you must respond to station ASAP.

from time of call (average)
bulletResponse to the station            2  minutes (remember normal RTA traffic rules apply)
bulletDressed                                     30 seconds
bulletAt the job                                    3 to 7 minutes
How often do I have to respond?

If your full-time (i.e., primary) employment classifies you as a "day worker" you must attend, as a minimum, 50% of all incidents which occur at nights and weekends.

If your full-time employment is of a "shift" nature, for example nursing, policing, mining, then you are required to attend, as a minimum, 33% of all calls which occur in the day, night and at the weekend.

At Kurri we attend over 270 calls a year on average.

Drills are held at the fire station at a pre-determined time. They are held at least twice a month, and last for two hours. Retained Fire Fighters are required to attend at least 75% of all drills over a six month period. This time commitment is separate from that required to attend incidents.

Make Up Drills are Available.

Do I get paid?

Simply, yes you do get paid. Payment is a monthly retainer and payment for calls, drills, and training. But the greatest payment is the satisfaction we get from protecting the community. Fire fighters join for this reason and not the money.

Fire Fighters may also elect to join the Fire Brigade Employees Union.
