Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade 1905 - 2005 One Hundred Years of Community Service On Saturday the 5th of February 2005 the Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade celebrated one hundred years of service to the Kurri Kurri and surrounding communities and to celebrate a day of festivities was organised. The birthday kicked off at 10:30am with an official ceremony at the fire station which was attended by the NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins AFSM, the Hon. Kerry Hickey State Minister, The Cessnock City Mayor Cr. John Clarence, NSWFB Zone Commander Mick Johnson and a party of other dignitaries Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade Honorary Members and the Current Members of Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade. Several speeches were made by the official party and the national anthem sung by Kirsty Akers and a plarke was unveiled by the Hon. Kerry Hickey to commemorate the occasion and the station was blessed by the NSWFB Associate Chaplin Ron Jenkins. The station also had a mural painted by Artist Jeremy Kang depicting a scene of fire fighting from yester year and a fire fighter saving a young woman from a burning building which was unveiled by Commissioner Mullins. After the official opening was finalised a parade which consisted of past and present members riding in fire engines both historic and state of the art including a hand drawn hose reel to the Kurri Kurri football ground were a huge day of activities begun. Leading the parade was the New South Wales Brass Band. At the football ground a full activities was organised including local bands and singers speeches by the dignitaries martial arts demonstrations, cheerleaders, pipe bands and belly dancers. Market stores and food and drink was also available. The fire brigades Public Relations tent with fire safety tips. The highlights of the day included the Strong Man who single handily pulled the fire truck fully laden weigh over 14.5 tonne for a distance of 100 metres. The kitchen fire simulator and the vehicle rescue display which included the Strong Man rolling a car. A great day was definitely had by all with over a thousand people attending. Following the day time activities was a dinner dance organised at the Kurri Kurri Bowling Club which kicked off at 6:30pm and all the fire fighters, honorary fire fighters organisers and special guests kicking back and relaxing for the night. Ten dollars from each ticket going in aid of the Burns Victims Unit at Westmead Hospital. On the night we raised over $3200.00 Burns Victims Unit at Westmead Hospital.
