About the StationKurri Kurri 349 is a professional Fire Brigade one of over 330 stations in the New South Wales Fire Brigade network. Kurri Kurri is situated about 30km North West of Newcastle (Australia) half way between Maitland and Cessnock. The Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade directly services over 10,000 residents from the communities of Kurri Kurri, Pelaw Main, Stanford Merthyr, Heddon Greta, Cliftleigh and Heddon Leigh . Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade was first opened on February the 5th 1905 and is currently manned by a staff of 15 Retained Fire Fighters including a Captain and Deputy Captain. We attend over 300 calls a year on average ranging from bush and structural fires to car crashes, hazardous material incidents and storm and tempest work. Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade takes great pride in its professional approach and its dedication to serve not only the local community but the community of New South Wales. Being a fully Retained station all Fire Fighters are members of the local community. We are on call 24 hours a day and 7 days a week without fail. All Fire Fighters are professionally trained, equipped and the station has a great deal of experience in Fire Fighting Techniques (structural and wild fires) Rescue and Hazardous Material incidents.
The New South Wales Fire Brigade GuaranteeWithin Fire Districts in the greater metropolitan region where there is an integrated network of strategically-located fire stations and specialist units, the NSW Fire Brigades guarantees to attend 90% of emergencies within 10 minutes from the time our Response and Coordination Centre is notified via Telstra 000. In all other areas of NSW we guarantee to attend emergencies as quickly as possible consistent with the distance that is needed to be traveled. The NSW Fire Brigades will issue fire permits within our Fire Districts in accordance with Sections 87 and 88 of the Rural Fires Act within 5 days, and make comment or recommendations in accordance with Clause 144 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2000 within 23 days. All telephone calls will be returned within 24 hours (weekdays) and general correspondence will be responded to within 10 working days. We’ll be there for you.
What We DoJob DescriptionRetained Fire Fighters are professional fire fighters and are employed of the New South Wales Fire Brigade. Actual fire fighting is only one of a number of duties we perform, we are all trained and have experience in Fire Appliances, Fire fighting Pumps, Hydraulic Rescue equipment, Power Generators, Breathing Apparatus, Ladders and Rope Rescue Techniques, Hazardous Material Incidents and Emergency Care. Fire fighting requires a thoroughly reliable team work system, where the safety of fire-fighters depends on each member of the teams reliability. Courage displayed by fire fighters in times of emergency is founded on discipline not foolhardiness. It is the confidence that each member of the that each of the team members will use all of their skills and knowledge in a combined effort to protect life and property. We also give a big part of our time to fire prevention and community awareness activities. This work is vital to reduce the number of serious life and property threatening fires. We do this through the FireEd program running in schools, the SABRE program, Community Functions and Static Displays.
